Characteristics Expected of Applicants to the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
For the master’s course, we are looking for students who have a strong motivation to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in material science and life science in order to foster researchers and technical experts in pharmaceutical sciences, capable of developing basic knowledge and skills acquired during the undergraduate education into advanced knowledge, and possessing a broad range of applied skills from discovery to proper drug use.
For the doctoral course, we are looking for students who have a strong motivation to discover drugs and elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying diseases and contribute to society as future leaders in the field of drug discovery, in order to produce excellent researchers capable of driving cutting-edge research in drug discovery science or clinical pharmaceutical science independently. For the clinical pharmacy doctoral course (Doctoral Program (Pharmacy)), we are looking for students who can acquire knowledge and skills in pharmaceutical science, mainly in clinical pharmaceutical science, and play a leading role in medical care as future experts in pharmaceutical sciences, in order to produce researchers/pharmacists who have specialized knowledge/skills and the ability to plan/conduct clinical research as advanced specialist pharmacists and contribute to the clinical development of drugs as prospective leaders in clinical development research/education/healthcare institutions. The Oncology Pharmacist Training Program is for those aiming to become leading oncology pharmacists. The Supergeneralist Pharmacist Training Program seeks students aiming to become pharmacists who, as drug experts in medical care teams, will play leading roles in drug therapy based on advanced analytical pharmaceutical skills.
Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences Applicant Screening Methods
Master’s course applicants are screened through the following examinations: general selection, recommendation-based examination, and special selection for foreign students. Doctoral course applicants are screened through the following examinations: transfer examination, special selection for adults, and special selection for foreign students. Clinical pharmacy doctoral course applicants (Doctoral Program (Pharmacy)) are screened through the following examinations: general selection, special selection for adults, and special selection for foreign students. The emphasis in these entrance examinations is on whether the applicant is able and qualified to conduct research in line with our educational principles and goals.
Master’s course
The general selection examination includes an external test to verify English language proficiency, and a written test to assess subject knowledge about pharmaceutical sciences. In selection, a particular emphasis is placed on subject knowledge.
In the recommendation-based examination, selection is based on the recommendation of the president of the university from which the applicant graduated, in combination with an external test to verify English language proficiency, a written test to assess logical thinking ability, and an oral examination to evaluate research planning and motivation, with particular emphasis on motivation for research.
The special selection for foreign students is for non-Japanese applicants and consists of an external test to verify English language proficiency, a written test to assess subject knowledge about pharmaceutical sciences, and an oral examination to evaluate research planning and motivation. In selection, a particular emphasis is placed on the motivation for research.
Successful candidates are advised to acquire advanced knowledge on discovery, proper drug use, basic knowledge, and skills over the entire range of pharmaceutical sciences necessary to develop applied skills, and basic English proficiency before admission, in addition to basic knowledge about material science and life science.
Doctoral course
The transfer examination includes an external test to verify English language proficiency, a written test to assess advanced subject knowledge about pharmaceutical sciences, and an oral examination to evaluate research planning and research competency. In selection, a particular emphasis is placed on research competency.
The special selection for adults is for those who work, and will continue to work after admission, as engineers, teachers, researchers, and other occupations. It is based on an oral examination to evaluate advanced subject knowledge about pharmaceutical sciences, and research aptitude/planning/competency. In selection, a particular emphasis is placed on research competency.
The special selection for foreign students is for non-Japanese applicants and consists of an external test to verify English language proficiency, a written test to assess advanced subject knowledge about pharmaceutical sciences, and an oral examination to evaluate research aptitude/planning/competency. In selection, a particular emphasis is placed on research competency.
Successful candidates are advised to acquire the ability to apply subject knowledge and skills in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, particularly in their relevant area of expertise; advanced knowledge of discovery, proper drug use, and research based on such knowledge; and English language proficiency sufficient to play an active role internationally in their area of expertise, before admission.
Clinical pharmacy doctoral course (Doctoral Program (Pharmacy))
In the general selection examination, selection is based on information in application documents, an external test to verify English language proficiency, a written test to assess subject knowledge about pharmaceutical sciences, and an oral examination to evaluate research aptitude, with a particular emphasis on subject knowledge.
The special selection for adults is for licensed pharmacists who have work experience, such as having worked in a hospital pharmacy department for at least one year, and will continue to work there after admission (as a general rule). It is based on an oral examination to evaluate subject knowledge about pharmaceutical sciences, and research, aptitude/planning/motivation. In selection, a particular emphasis is placed on research motivation.
